9:45-10:45  Keynote Presentation “Year Round Gardening” by Escambia County Extension Agent Beth Bolles

Each season creates its own distinctive feel and appearance, and a well-designed garden includes plants that reflect a unique sense of place. There is no better place to reflect this than along the Coastal South. Watching a gardens character change with the seasons is part of the joy of gardening. Knowing what plants do best, when to plant them, along with a better understanding of our unique climate will determine your success. Join us to discover the wide variety and diversity of plants that call the Coastal South home.

A.“Ornamental Grasses” by Carol Lord

Ornamental grasses have graced the natural landscapes of the earth. Now a variety of choices are available at local nurseries to add new dimension to any home landscape. Carol will share how to select and care for various ornamental grasses, and treat possible disease to which they are subject.

B.“See What Pops Up” by Jerry Patee

Many plants from around the world, both tropical and temperate growing zones, join our native and traditional plants in our back yards along the Coastal South to create a kaleidoscope of color and interest. We will be looking at a variety of these plant, which have found a home growing along the Gulf Coast. “Let’s see what Pop’s up!”

1:00 – 2:00 Breakout Session II

A.“Playing in the Dirt” by Tina Tuttle

To garden successfully you need to have a basic understanding of soil characteristics and know how to improve unfavorable conditions. Come ‘play in the dirt’ and discover what it takes to dig it!

B.“Planting”: It’s All About Timing by Larry Morris
Many seeds are sowed, but good seeds in good ground produce a lot of fruit. Larry will share his knowledge of when to plant and where to get it.
