Pick ‘n’ Poke Garden Club was organized April 2, 1970, with twenty members. There was an early interest in flower arranging, artistic design and flower shows, gardening, and birds. Early projects included: The then City Zoo, Ferry Pass Elementary School, arranging flowers for nursing homes, the Pensacola Art Center, and the USO. For work at the zoo, the Club received a Civics Award in 1972, even though the zoo closed that same year.
The most extensive project undertaken by us involved Scenic Highway’s designation as a Scenic Drive. In October, 1973, the Florida State Legislature designated Scenic Highway as a Scenic Drive. The scrapbook entry on the Scenic Highway Project won 2nd prize from the Pensacola Federation, and in 1976 the club was presented the Florida Environmental Improvement Plaque and a check for the Scenic Highway Landscaping Project. The Club also received an award from the League of Women Voters for the Scenic Highway work.
Members have won numerous awards in flower shows, and several members served as judges for many years. Age has curtailed many of the Club activities, but we continue to enjoy meeting and having programs which have included subjects such as orchids, floral design, roses, table settings, birds, and wild flowers.
The Club meets on the fourth Thursday of each month from September through May. Meetings start at 10 a.m. and are usually held in members’ homes, with lunch enjoyed by everyone.
