The Pensacola Garden Center has grown through decades of dedication, resilience, and community spirit. From the creation of a permanent home for the Pensacola Federation of Garden Clubs to the continued renewal of our facilities and gardens, each generation of members has helped shape the Garden Center we enjoy today.

The Garden Center: A Legacy of Growth

1962

A Home of Our Own

Groundbreaking for the new Garden Center took place on March 29, 1962. Construction was completed in August, and on September 23 the Pensacola Federation of Garden Clubs dedicated its new Garden Center—a permanent home created to serve its members and community.

Room to Grow

As the organization evolved, so did its home. In 1972, an expansion added what we now know as the Apartment and the Café, providing additional space for members to gather, work, learn, and grow together.

2004

Weathering Hurricane Ivan

Hurricane Ivan brought significant damage to the Garden Center property, toppling mature pine trees and damaging the apartment. Extensive repairs followed, supported by the determination of members and the surrounding community.

2011–2017

Renewal & Celebration

From 2011 through 2016, major improvements renewed the Garden Center inside and out—from the lobby, auditorium, restrooms and Café to lighting, windows, landscaping, acoustics, roofing and parking-area improvements. In 2017, the Pensacola Federation of Garden Clubs celebrated its 85th anniversary with a special tea.

Through every season, the Garden Center has flourished—thanks to the dedication of our members and the community we are proud to serve.

A Timeline of Growth, Achievements, and Community Impact

1932

The Azalea, Crepe Myrtle, and Camellia clubs joined the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.

1937

Pensacola hosted the FFGC Annual Convention.

1940

PFGC grew to 16 clubs with 352 members.

1943

A War Bond Auction at the Annual Meeting raised $3,000.

1948

The first Flower Show School was held.

1949

The Garden Center was acquired near the Pensacola Bay Bridge, and the first issue of The Camellia was published.

1953

PFGC became incorporated.

1954

The Garden Center Building Fund was established.

1955

Membership expanded to 36 clubs.

1956

PFGC celebrated its Silver Anniversary and launched the “Litterbug” campaign.

1962

Groundbreaking for the new Garden Center took place, with construction completed and the building dedicated later that year.

1966

The mortgage on the Garden Center was retired, and Pensacola hosted the 40th State Convention.

1970

PFGC held its first Flower Show at the new fairgrounds, winning a national award.

Flower shows have remained an important part of PFGC’s legacy, celebrating horticultural excellence while sharing members’ knowledge, creativity, and talents with the community.

1975

The Roster of Honor was established to recognize significant contributions.

1982

PFGC celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a special tea.

1990

PFGC co-sponsored the art and floral design exhibition, “How Our Garden Grows.”

2000

The first “Secret Gardens of the Emerald Coast Garden Tour” was launched, and new Junior Gardeners Clubs were formed.

Since 2000

A Legacy Left in the Garden

The Secret Gardens of the Emerald Coast Garden Tour became a cherished PFGC tradition, inviting the community into exceptional private gardens and celebrating the creativity of local gardeners. Participating gardens received commemorative stones such as these from the 2016 and 2017 tours.

2004

The Veterans Garden was dedicated, and the Festival of Trees fundraiser was initiated.

2006

PFGC celebrated its 75th Anniversary with special events.

2012

Fundraising efforts led to the renovation of the Garden Center Auditorium.

2014

Sweet Bay dedicated a “Whimsey Garden” in memory of Carolyn Whitmer, and the 63rd Annual Fair Flower Show received more than 900 entries.

Creativity, Fellowship & Friendship

The traditions built across generations continue through programs, events, horticulture, floral design, education, and fellowship. Events such as Tour of Tables bring members together to share their talents while strengthening the friendships at the heart of PFGC.
